ABOUT
Her first stage name was “Aura,” but she later changed it to “Dee MC,” where “MC” refers for microphone controller and “Dee” is a shortened version of her name Deepa.
The first hip-hop musicians that Dee MC listened to were Kardinal Offishall, Akon, and Mike Shinoda.
Her parents forbade her from performing anyplace during her early years of rapping because she had to go to rap events, many of which took place at night. As a result, she was unable to perform anywhere.
In order to raise awareness about personal hygiene on Menstrual Hygiene Day, she collaborated with the charity group WASH United and published the song “No More Limits” on October 31, 2018.
In order to inspire women to pursue their aspirations and defy social standards, the cosmetics brand Glow & Lovely worked with rapper Dee MC and published the song “Glow Ko Na Roko” in 2020.
Alongside Guru Randhawa and Anirudh, Dee MC appeared in the music video for the song “Swipe Right Material.” The song was created in association with the Tinder dating service.
In the Red Bull Spotlight, a countrywide contest for young rappers, she served as one of the judges.
Dee MC had no formal rap training before starting out. She used the internet to conduct her independent research and learn everything. She stated in an interview that she was one of the fortunate kids to have access to the Internet at a young age because her father worked abroad (in Saudi Arabia). Some of those websites don’t even exist anymore. I started downloading songs from the Internet when I was in sixth grade.
Dee once responded, “My journey towards dancing inspired me a lot,” when asked how she became motivated to pursue a career in hip-hop. I started dabbling in hip hop through dance. I started dancing when I was five years old. Since I have Bharatnatyam dancing experience, performing on stage is nothing new to me. I already had the desire to perform in front of others and the artistic inclination. When I was 17, I started b-boying (also known as b-girling, an athletic form of street dancing popular in the United States), but I was unable to continue. I became quite interested in rapping after that, and I first began in 2011. This came after I was introduced to Bombay’s rap scene by someone who had seen my album cover.
She twice failed the CA eligibility test. She tried to persuade her parents that it was not her fault that she failed twice by placing the responsibility on the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. I informed them that the (Institute of Chartered Accountants of India) intentionally fails students in order to gain a few points, she claimed. It was quite downbeat. I had failing grades of two and three. My parents refused to accept that I couldn’t always be held responsible.
She worked as a freelance writer for websites from 2014 to 2016 in order to supplement her income while honing her rapping abilities through practise away from home. She revealed that I would travel to Grant Road in south Mumbai for the work from Kalyan. You know how far Kalyan is? It irked me. Then I was forced to write about the financial success of Hollywood or Malayalam movies. It was not at all exciting, and I only did it for the money.
In the 2019 musical drama “Gully Boy,” which was based on the hip-hop scene in India, Dee MC starred as herself. We (artists) don’t really want to talk about our hardships; things that happened more than 10 years ago, she noted when discussing the movie.
I mean, where were you guys when we needed help and exposure? Between January and February, all of a sudden, people start contacting us and asking about our experiences because a movie has just come out and a certain actor is promoting it. I want to add, with all due respect, that Gully Boy has only scratched the surface for us. People used to make fun of us, laugh at us, and write us off until a few years ago. We established our own support network. We would act in each other’s videos, encouraging and supporting one another’s creations.
