Pravin Anand

Pravin Anand serves as the Managing Partner at Anand and Anand, a role he has held since August 1979. With an extensive career spanning over four decades, Pravin has established himself as a trailblazer in the field of intellectual property (IP) law, participating in over 2,500 cases. Under his leadership, Anand and Anand, a firm initially established by his grandfather in 1923, has evolved from a one-room office in Old Delhi to a significant legal entity with offices in four major cities.

EDUCATION

Pravin’s educational background includes a BSc in Chemistry with Honors from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, where he graduated between 1973 and 1976.

AWARDS

Beyond his legal practice, Pravin has received prestigious awards such as the AIPPI Award of Merit and INTA’s President’s Award. He is recognized as the “Most Innovative Lawyer” by the Financial Times and holds the distinction of being the first Indian inducted into the IAM IP Hall of Fame.

CAREER

His career has been instrumental in shaping India’s IP jurisprudence, covering areas such as patents, copyright, design, trademarks, enforcement, and dispute resolution.

Throughout his tenure, Pravin has been a key figure in several landmark IP cases that have significantly influenced India’s legal landscape. Notable achievements include his involvement in patent lawsuits that transformed the pharmaceutical and bio-technology enforcement regime in India, with cases such as Merck v Glenmark, Roche v Cipla, and the Monsanto case.

Pravin’s contributions to legal literature are evident through his writings for Halsbury’s Laws of India on Intellectual Property and various chapters in international publications like IBLJ, ABLJ, GTDT, AsiaIP, and MIP.

In addition to his professional achievements, Pravin is actively involved in industry leadership roles. He chairs the Confederation of Indian Industry’s Sub-Committee on IPR and serves as the chair of the National Council on IPR at the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India. He is also a Technical Committee Member of the Legal Services Sectional Committee at the Bureau of Indian Standards and holds an honorary position on the Managing Committee of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Pravin’s consistent recognition by prominent legal publications, including IBLJ, ABLJ, MIP, WTR, Who’s Who Legal, Expert Guides, Chambers and Partners, World IP Review, GIPC, and IAM, underscores his standing as a leading IP lawyer and a trailblazer in the field.
