CAREER

Álvarez started his career with Burger King and Wendy’s before being appointed as president and chief operations officer of McDonald’s USA. Later, he served as president of McDonald’s North America.
Due to chronic knee pain, Álvarez announced his retirement from McDonald’s, effective December 31, 2009. Previously, he had been rehired after being forced out in 1998 due to an affair with a subordinate.

Alvarez concluded his tenure as president and chief operating officer of McDonald’s Corporation in 2009. Before joining McDonald’s in 1994, he served in leadership roles at Burger King Corporation and Wendy’s International, Inc.Throughout his career, Alvarez held various leadership roles, including chief operations officer and president of the central division at McDonald’s USA. Before joining the U.S. business, he served as president of McDonald’s Mexico. From July 2004 until January 2005, Alvarez was president of McDonald’s USA, where he spearheaded the implementation of the company’s “Plan to Win” strategy, which played a pivotal role in the turnaround of its U.S. operations. Subsequently, from January 2005 until August 2006, he served as president of McDonald’s North America, overseeing all McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. and Canada. Alvarez then assumed the role of president and chief operating officer in August 2006, where he was responsible for setting global strategy and overseeing operations for 32,000 McDonald’s restaurants across 118 countries.

Alvarez is a passionate supporter of education, actively involved in various initiatives. He currently sits on the President’s Council for the University of Miami. Additionally, Alvarez serves on the boards of directors for Lowe’s Companies, Inc., Traeger, Inc., First Watch Restaurant Group, Inc., and several other private companies. He has previously held board positions with McDonald’s Corporation, Realogy Holdings Corp., KeyCorp, Dunkin’ Brands Group, Inc., and Skylark Co., Ltd
