Abhishek Ray joined Ekru Alluring Designs as Creative Director in June 2005. He worked there till July of 2014. Abhishek Ray began working as a Freelance Guest Faculty at the National Institute of Fashion Technology in Kolkata in September 2010 and remained there till December 2010. In August 2014, he joined Ruceru Couture Private Limited, Kolkata – IndiaMART as an Executive Design Head in Bridals and Trousseau, where he remained until October 2016. In July 2014, Abhishek Ray launched his own brand and showroom, Abhishek Ray Creations, and began working as its Creative Director alongside his business partner, Abhilasha Shaw Arora.
In May 2017, Abhishek Ray began working as a freelance Guest Faculty at INIFD’s Indore, Bhopal, and Kolkata offices.
He was employed for INIFD till May of 2018. Abhishek Ray began working as Adjunct Faculty at Amity University’s Amity School of Fashion Technology department in July 2019. He later resigned the role to become a Freelance Guest faculty member at the Gurukul School of Design in March 2021. Abhishek Ray held this job until May 20, 2021. Abhishek Ray married his gay boyfriend Cheitan Sharma, a digital marketing and software developer, on July 3, 2022. During their wedding, Abhishek Ray dressed up like a traditional Bengali groom in a dhoti-kurta, while his gay partner wore a sherwani.
Abhishek Ray discussed his friendship with Cheitan Sharma in a media interview. He stated that they had been Facebook friends for a long time prior to their marriage. They finally met in person in 2020. He went on to say that shortly after their initial encounter, they had a short journey to Agra, where his partner proposed to him in front of the Taj Mahal. Abhishek Ray went on to explain that he was overjoyed with the filmy-style proposal, and that it felt like a dream come true for him. Ray explained, “We went to Agra, where he proposed to me in front of the Taj Mahal in a very filmic fashion. Because I casually mentioned to him that I am a Bollywood fan and that it was my desire to visit the Taj Mahal with my girlfriend.”
In another interview with a media reporter, Abhishek Ray stated on his wedding day that he and Cheitan Sharma were both aware that their marriage was not legally valid or recognised in India, but he was delighted that he wedded Cheitan Sharma openly. He stated, “I prefer to refer to it as a wedding ceremony. I can’t say I’m legally married, but I am married, and Chaitanya is my husband.”Cheitan Sharma, his gay boyfriend, also took part in the conversation and urged other members of the LGBTQ+ community to fight for their rights and aspirations. Cheitan stated that Abhishek Ray was a good person and that he was fortunate to have him as a husband. ‘I feel blessed and lucky to have Abhishek as my husband, life partner, and best friend,’ Cheitan said.
