EDUCATION

Pixxel, a spacetech startup based in Bengaluru, intends to deploy 24 satellites within the next two years, according to a statement from a senior company official. Established in 2019 by Awais Ahmed, the four-year-old startup is set to launch the initial six satellites of the 24-satellite constellation, Fireflies, in 2024, with plans for an additional 18 in 2025.

In the early 2000s, in the tranquil village of Aldur within Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district, a young boy named Awais harbored dreams of becoming an astronaut. In an era devoid of the internet and smartphones, his father provided him with encyclopedias that unlocked gateways to explore galaxies, space, and the universe.
Fast forward to 2015, on the BITS Pilani campus in Rajasthan, Awais’ passion for space reached new heights. Throughout his first and second years, he actively contributed to Team Anant, a student satellite group, collaborating with ISRO scientists on satellite projects. This marked his initial exposure to satellites, an experience he held dear.
Taking inspiration from Elon Musk, he co-established Hyperloop India in 2016 during his second year of college. The team engaged in SpaceX’s Hyperloop Pod competition in 2017, focusing on designing a pod for high-speed travel within a vacuum tube.
In February 2019, Awais, along with Kshitij Khandelwal and two other engineers, co-founded Pixxel. The objective was to launch advanced imaging satellites known as hyperspectral imaging satellites, capable of capturing daily images of every location on Earth.
Pixxel has successfully deployed three satellites and is set to launch an additional six in the upcoming year. In April 2022, they made history by launching ‘Shakuntala’ aboard the SpaceX Falcon-9 rocket, solidifying their position as one of India’s leading commercial satellite launch providers.
In November 2022, their third hyperspectral satellite, ‘Anand,’ was launched via an ISRO PSLV-C54 rocket. Weighing 15 kg, Anand will diligently observe Earth, offering environmental data through more than 150 wavelengths.

“For instance, when fertilizer companies acquire our data, they can determine nitrogen deficiencies in the soil through a nutrient map. Companies can also assess crop performance and pinpoint areas with a higher prevalence of crop diseases,” he says.
