Captain Anshuman Singh, an officer of the Indian Army, was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award, by President Droupadi Murmu. Born in 1997 in the village of Bardiha Dalpat in Deoria district, Uttar Pradesh, Captain Anshuman Singh grew up in a family with a strong military background. His father, Ravi Pratap Singh, also known as Akhilesh Singh, is a former soldier of the Indian Army. His mother, Manju Devi, is a homemaker. Anshuman completed his early education at a local school and later attended Sainik School in Shimla. He graduated with an MBBS degree from Pune in 2020.
Captain Anshuman Singh’s family includes his father, Ravi Pratap Singh, a retired soldier; his mother, Manju Devi; his brother, Dr. Ghanshyam Singh; and his sister, Dr. Tanya Singh. Both his siblings are doctors and reside in Noida.
Captain Anshuman Singh married Smriti Singh on February 10, 2023. Smriti is an engineer working for a multinational company in Noida. The couple had only been married for a few months before Captain Singh’s tragic posting to Siachen.

Captain Singh lost his life during a fire that broke out in an ammunition dump in Siachen. Demonstrating extraordinary bravery, he rescued a fellow army official trapped inside a fiber-glass hut and attempted to retrieve life-saving medicines from a medical investigation shelter.
