Dr. Sakthivel, the Owner and Founder of Poppys Group of Companies in Tirupur, currently serves as the Chairman of the Apparel Export Promotion Council. With over three and a half decades of experience, he is a visionary leader in trade and industry. Dr. Sakthivel is known for his pioneering initiatives and embodies the roles of a guide, mentor, nationalist, philanthropist, and humanist.

His unwavering commitment to addressing exporters’ issues is evident in his leadership roles at FIEO, AEPC, and TEA. He has played a pivotal role in fostering the growth of India’s export sector, particularly for MSMEs, earning recognition both nationally and internationally. As the Founder President of the Tirupur Exporters’ Association (TEA), he has made significant contributions, propelling Tirupur’s exports from a modest Rs 15 Crore to an impressive Rs 26,000 crores. Dr. Sakthivel’s influence also extends to positioning Tirupur as a global hub for cluster development.

Starting as a young and ambitious entrepreneur in 1973, Dr. Sakthivel’s dedication, innovative trade practices, and hard work have not only established Poppys Group of Companies as a leading knitwear exporter in India but have also driven various visionary projects in Tirupur. These projects include the Tirupur Export Knitwear Industrial Complex (TEKIC), Inland Container Depot (ICD), TEA Public School, New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited (NTADCL), NIFT – TEA Fashion Knitwear Institute, Netaji Apparel Park (NAP), and India Knit Fair Association (IKFA).

In his previous roles, Dr. Sakthivel has held several prestigious positions, including President of the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) in Coimbatore, First Chairman of the Apparel Made-Ups & Home Furnishing Sector Skill Council (AMHSSC), Chairman of the India Knit Fair Association (IKFA), Chairman of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) in Tamil Nadu, Chairman of the IACC Government Affairs Committee, and Chairman of the Kongu Global Forum.
During his leadership in various industry and trade organizations across the country, Dr. Sakthivel played a pivotal role in organizing important delegations and Investors’ Meets in multiple countries. He also contributed to improving ease of doing business internationally by enhancing flight connectivity and other measures.

Furthermore, Dr. Sakthivel has held positions as a Director on the Boards of UCO Bank, IDBI, and ECGC. In 2009, the Government of India honored him with the prestigious “Padma Shri” award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the export sector. Additionally, he has received an honorary Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) degree from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, in acknowledgment of his significant role in inspiring and mentoring young individuals to become exporters. It’s worth noting that he has also been a recipient of awards such as “KnitSarathi,” “KonguNattu SathanaiyaalarViruthu,” and “KonguMamaniViruthu.”

While serving as the Chairman of AEPC, Dr. A Sakthivel played an active role in advocating for essential fiscal relief measures from the government. These measures were aimed at facilitating the industry’s swift entry into the production of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). He also successfully lobbied for the government to reconsider its classification of MSMEs and emphasized the significance of Man-made Fibre (MMF) based garments and medical textiles. This effort led to the government recognizing MMF as a pivotal sector eligible for the Production Linked Incentive Scheme.
