PERSONAL INFORMATION

Born as Dommaraju Gukesh, he hails from Chennai and is the son of Rajnikanth, an ENT surgeon, and Padma, a microbiologist.

EDUCATION

Gukesh D attends Velammal Vidyalaya in Mel Ayanambakkam, Chennai. Gukesh’s journey in chess began at the age of seven in 2013, and his passion for the game has only grown stronger over the years.

CAREER

In March 2019, he achieved a historic feat by becoming the third-youngest person ever to qualify for the title of Grandmaster by FIDE. He continued to excel in the chess world, and on 16 October 2022, at just 16 years old, he gained immense popularity by becoming the youngest player ever to defeat the world champion Magnus Carlsen, achieving this milestone during the Aimchess Rapid Tournament.

Gukesh’s talent and hard work have earned him numerous accolades throughout his career. He has secured impressive victories, including winning the U-9 category of the Asian School Chess Championships in 2015 and the 31st National U-11 Open Chess Championship in 2017. Notably, he clinched the gold medal in various categories at the Asian Youth Chess Championships in 2018.

Gukesh’s success has come with the unwavering support of his family, especially his father, who made significant sacrifices by giving up his job to fully focus on Gukesh’s chess career. This dedication and support have undoubtedly played a crucial role in his journey as a chess grandmaster. His coach and mentor, Vishnu Prasanna, have also been instrumental in shaping his skills and guiding him towards greatness.
