Born on Tuesday, 29 November 1988, in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, Sonam grew up in the vibrant city of Kolkata. Her father, Subrata Bhattacharya, is an Indian football manager and former professional footballer, while her mother, Lata Bhattacharya, is a homemaker. Sonam has an elder brother named Shaheb Bhattacharya, who is an actor.
EDUCATION
Sonam Bhattacharya completed her education at Gokhale Memorial Girls’ School and pursued her studies at Heramba Chandra College, popularly known as South City Day College, also located in Kolkata.
In 2010, Sonam ventured to Aberdeen, Scotland, where she pursued a Master of Science degree at Robert Gordon University.
CAREER
Sonam Bhattacharya entered into matrimony with Sunil Chhetri, the Indian football player, on 4 December 2017 in Kolkata. Prior to their marriage, Sonam and Sunil had been in a relationship for almost 13 years. In an interview with Humans of Bombay, Sunil Chhetri shared the story of their relationship. Interestingly, Sonam’s father, Subrata Bhattacharya, happened to be Chhetri’s coach and often mentioned him at home. When Sonam was 15 years old, she obtained Chhetri’s contact number from her father’s phone and sent him a text expressing her admiration and desire to meet him. Although Chhetri initially thought of her as a child when they first met, they continued to exchange texts for about two months. A surprising turn of events occurred when Chhetri was fixing Subrata Bhattacharya’s phone and a number began ringing. It turned out to be Sonam, and he discovered that she was his coach’s daughter. To avoid complications with her father, who was also Chhetri’s coach, Sunil and Sonam decided to pause their relationship. However, Chhetri couldn’t stop thinking about Sonam and reached out to her again. They kept their relationship private and managed to meet twice a year due to Chhetri’s frequent travels. In order to watch movies together, Chhetri would purchase two tickets, leave one at the counter, and Sonam would collect it later to join him in the theater. Eventually, Chhetri visited Sonam’s house and expressed his feelings to her father. Upon hearing Chhetri’s confession, Subrata Bhattacharya gave his approval for their marriage, and a few months later, the couple tied the knot.
On the professional front, Sonam Bhattacharya joined Blue Orchid Mansion Pvt. Ltd. as a director on 15 October 2013.
