CAREER
At home, he allocated space for Uday to pursue cricket, initiating his journey in the sport. Despite the harsh winter cold in Sri Ganganagar, sometimes dropping to just 1 degree Celsius, Uday persisted in his practice sessions. Inspired by his father’s support, 11-year-old Uday relocated from Sri Ganganagar to Fazilka in pursuit of enhanced cricketing prospects.
He participated in the under-14 and under-16 teams before relocating to Bathinda to join the under-19 team, benefiting from top-notch cricket facilities provided by the Punjab Cricket Association to enhance his skills.
Uday and his father commuted daily to Bathinda. Within a year, Uday earned a spot in the Punjab under-14 team camp. His father then drove him to Mohali, marking Uday’s first experience living away from family. Shortly after dropping Uday off and reaching Ludhiana, his father received a call from Uday expressing a desire to return home.
Initially, his father delayed picking him up for a week, during which Uday gradually began to relish the camp experience. Impressed by Uday’s performance in a fitness test, the Punjab team captain, Mandeep Singh, gifted him a cricket bat as recognition of his talent.
In 2022, Uday served as a reserve player for the Under-19 World Cup in the West Indies but didn’t have the opportunity to play. Recognizing the need to enhance his cricketing abilities upon his return, he displayed remarkable dedication, returning home at 11 pm only to resume practice by 6 am the next day.
During the same year, Uday led the Indian team in the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup, guiding them to the semifinals. With outstanding performances, accumulating 297 runs in 5 matches at an impressive average of 99, Uday earned the captaincy of the Under-19 Indian cricket team.
During practice matches preceding the 2023 Under-19 World Cup, Uday showcased his prowess by scoring 74 runs against Australia and an unbeaten 50 against Sri Lanka. In India’s opening match on January 20, 2023, against Bangladesh, Uday contributed significantly to India’s total of 251 runs by scoring 64 runs from 94 deliveries, while his teammate Adarsh Singh led the scorecard with 76 runs.
Ahead of the semifinals against Nepal on February 2, 2024, Uday exhibited exceptional batting skills, amassing 100 runs off 107 balls, including 9 boundaries. Partnering with Sachin Dhas, they established a record-breaking 215-run partnership in just 202 balls. In the semifinal clash against South Africa on February 7, Uday continued his impressive form, scoring 81 runs from 124 balls, featuring 6 sixes.
