In 2002, Yasmeen Shah embarked on her political journey by affiliating herself with the Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) party. As a representative of the PML-Q, she secured a seat in the Senate of Pakistan in the same year, commencing her tenure of six years in the esteemed position.
Member Of National Assembly
During the 2008 Pakistani general elections, Yasmeen Shah ran as a candidate for Constituency NA-225 (Badin-cum-Tando Muhammad Khan -II) under the banner of the PML-Q party. Unfortunately, she faced defeat at the hands of Fahmida Mirza, a candidate from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), with a margin of 64,495 votes. In 2013, she parted ways with the Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q) and joined the Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) party. CONTROVERSY
In 2007, Fahmida Mirza, a prominent Pakistani politician and the 18th Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan, along with her husband Zulfiqar Mirza, also a politician, lodged a petition with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) challenging the authenticity of Yasmeen Shah and her husband’s educational degrees, which were submitted during their nomination process for the Senate elections. Following a thorough investigation, the ECP declared Yasmeen Shah guilty in November 2017 of possessing and presenting a counterfeit Bachelor of Arts degree (BA) at the time of her appointment as a senator. Consequently, her membership in the Senate of Pakistan was revoked, and she was instructed to reimburse the salary and allowances received during her tenure as a senator. The case was subsequently referred to the Badin District and Sessions Court for further legal proceedings.
Yasmeen Shah vehemently denied the allegations of submitting a fake graduation degree and appealed to the court to reinstate her Senate membership. On March 29, 2018, the Badin District and Sessions Court ordered the re-verification of her bachelor’s degree and granted her permission to participate in the 2018 Pakistani general elections. However, on February 17, 2021, District and Session Judge Farooq Abbasi found Yasmeen Shah guilty of purportedly possessing a fraudulent degree and sentenced her to two years of imprisonment, along with a fine of Rs. 50,000.
