In 2009, while working as a full-time journalist, Ramveer Singh learned about his friend’s father, who had been diagnosed with cancer. One potential factor he discovered was the consumption of vegetables contaminated with chemicals.
However, five years ago, an event compelled him to resign from his job and embark on a home farming journey. Ramveer Singh has transformed the terrace and balcony of his three-story house into a thriving farm, generating an annual income of 70 lakhs from home-grown vegetables and his expertise in advanced farming techniques. Over 10 thousand plants now flourish at Ramveer Singh’s residence, attracting visitors from distant places who come to witness the cultivation of home-grown strawberries, cauliflower, okra, capsicum, and various other vegetables. The demand for organic vegetables and other food items is currently on the rise.
In this scenario, Ramveer Singh has found significant success due to the soaring demand for his chemical-free, pesticide-free, and organic vegetables. Ramveer Singh cultivates a wide variety of vegetables, such as cabbage, tomatoes, and capsicums, without soil or chemical fertilizers within his household. He employs hydroponic farming, a technique that uses 90 percent less water, inspired by his visit to Dubai, where he witnessed and was captivated by this innovative farming method. Upon returning to India, he extensively researched and learned about hydroponic farming, including its implementation in Mumbai.
He pursued training in Kolkata for hydroponic farming. Three years ago, he initiated hydroponic farming on the balcony and terrace of his home. Ramveer Singh has now taken on the role of a trainer, teaching others this farming technique. Individuals from distant places seek his guidance, and he readily accommodates requests to set up hydroponic systems at their homes. To achieve this, Ramveer Singh initially installed four-inch-thick PVC pipes on his rooftop, replacing net-cups with hundreds of interconnected pipes. In an interview, Ram Singh explained that these pipes are arranged in accordance with the slope of the system.
A motor circulates water through one section, enabling it to flow back into the tank, ensuring both plant survival and reduced water usage. Ramveer Singh mentioned that the cost of setting up a hydroponic farming system with a hundred plant pipes and stands is approximately 12 lakh rupees. Ramveer achieved remarkable success within just three years of dedicated effort. Former UNEP Executive Director Erik Solheim commended Ramveer’s work and shared a video, captioning it with admiration for the UP, India resident who cultivates soilless, chemical-free vegetables in his three-story, 70 lakh rupees house.
According to a report, Ramveer has successfully cultivated 15 thousand plants and vines of various types through hydroponic methods. His decision to embrace organic farming was influenced by a significant event in his life—his friend’s uncle’s tragic demise due to cancer, which was determined to be unrelated to intoxication but potentially linked to pesticides used on vegetables and other household food items.
Following this incident, Ramveer embarked on a mission to promote organic farming. As per a report by Navgujarat Times, Ramveer has dedicated his full attention to farming, occasionally taking on freelance work as a journalist.
He sells wheat flour for Rs 60 per kg, rice for Rs 130 per kg, and jaggery powder for Rs 150 per kg, while also offering free training to small-scale farmers.
He followed his heart, leaving behind a lucrative private sector job, and embarked on a fulfilling path. Ramveer Singh has achieved something extraordinary by transforming his three-story house into a flourishing farm, now reaping substantial annual rewards.
