CAREER

On December 25, 2019, the world bid farewell to the animation legend, perhaps embarking on a journey to bring joy to another realm, in an alternate dimension.
Today marks the third anniversary of his passing. His friends, colleagues, mentors, mentees, and all who knew him are still grappling with the void left by his absence. Many friends and family members may still find it hard to believe that he’s no longer with us, but the incredible legacy of his work and love endures.
Prakash Moorthy, the academic chairman of MG University St Joseph’s College of Communication, who has affiliations with SRFTI Kolkata and NID, attests that Chaudhuri was more than just an animation filmmaker and designer. He was a compassionate individual who extended a helping hand to those in need and wove captivating stories with his unique sense of humor. Moorthy concludes, “He was truly the visionary who revolutionized Indian animation.

According to Pete, a filmmaker, animator, and part-time animation lecturer at UCLAN, Arnab exuded a perpetual sense of sunshine, always brimming with enthusiasm. Meanwhile, Nina Sabnani, an educator in Art, Design, and Technology, remembers the legend as an exceptionally rare individual who made time for everyone and consistently shared kind words with all.
“As this time of year arrives, Arnab’s warm smile greets us from a distant place. It’s now even clearer how truly exceptional he was – as a human being, a friend, a collaborator, and a leader, seamlessly harmonizing these roles. He touched the hearts of the young, challenged the old with grace, and remained true to himself. His absence is keenly felt, just as I miss him dearly, as do many others,” Sabnani shared.

Simply knowing Arnab, even if only briefly, has been a profound educational experience for me as a filmmaker. He was a rare gem in our artistic community, crafting an impressive body of work that propelled Indian animation onto grand stages. He did this with grace, a good-natured spirit, and a clear commitment to leaving the door wide open for others to follow. Thanks to him, we recognize that it’s a door worth walking through. His wisdom, support, grievances, and unwavering beliefs, shared at places like the NID chai gate, serene lakefronts, festival screenings, and a once unfamiliar Mumbai, continue to guide my journey and always will. We all aspire to create work that would make him proud,” expressed Upamanyu Bhattacharya, the winner of the Arnab Chaudhuri Animation ACE Award in 2022.

Arnab Chaudhuri’s directorial collaboration with Walt Disney (UTV), “Arjun: The Warrior Prince” (2012), stands as one of the animation industry’s most remarkable achievements. This creative visionary, who firmly believed in India’s potential to create world-class animation, illuminated the path for all through his work. Notably, it became the first Indian animation feature to be longlisted at the Oscars.
Chaudhuri’s unwavering faith in India’s talent, coupled with his relentless pursuit of excellence, played a pivotal role in putting Indian animation on the global stage.

His influence has consistently served as a wellspring of inspiration for the younger generation. Even two years after his passing, a substantial social media campaign emerged, with aspiring talents from the industry passionately advocating for the re-release of “Arjun: The Warrior Prince.” This heartfelt gesture deeply moved Chaudhuri’s friends, family, and colleagues.

The director behind this groundbreaking animated feature film and a staunch advocate for the Indian animation sector, he garnered equal admiration for his contributions as a television professional. His notable roles at Channel V and Turner only added to his illustrious career.
