EDUCATION

Professor K.S. Jagannatha Rao attended Sri Sai Baba High School in Anantapur, India for his schooling and later earned both his undergraduate and Ph.D. degrees from Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati, India.

CAREER

After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Rao joined the Central Food Technological Research Institute in Mysore in 1987. He later became the Director of the Institute for Scientific Research and Technological Advances (INDICASAT AIP) in the Republic of Panama, making significant contributions to advancing innovation in higher education and research in Panama since 2010.
Dr. Rao played a pivotal role in the establishment of PRISM (Panamanian Research Institutes of Science and Medicine) in Latin America. Under his leadership, seven research centers were established within this institute, attracting funding from organizations such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, NIH, UK Grants, MRC-UK, ICGEB, NSF, and the Alzheimer’s Foundation, among others.

Dr. Rao’s research expertise is centered on Brain Research, and he has founded an Alzheimer’s Centre. He has a substantial publication record, with 165 papers published in prestigious Biochemistry and Neuroscience Journals, as well as the supervision of 19 Ph.D. students.

In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Rao holds positions as adjunct faculty in Biomedical Informatics at UTHS, Houston, and serves as an Advisory Board Member for the UT-El Paso Minority Health NIH program in the USA. Furthermore, he is affiliated with the Methodist Research Institute in Houston, USA as Adjunct Faculty.

Dr. Rao achieved notable recognitions in his career, including being elected as a Member of the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science (APANAC), often considered the National Science Academy of Panama. Additionally, he received several international honors, becoming a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (NASI) in India in 2006, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology in the UK in 2016, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in the UK in the same year. He was also recognized as a Foreign Fellow of the Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences in India in 2016, a Fellow of the Association of Biotechnology and Pharmacy in India in 2008, and achieved the status of Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences (FTWAS) in 2018.

Dr. Rao played a pivotal role in the establishment of a Biomedical Research facility and the first Depression Brain Bank at Jagadguru Shivaratheswara Swamiji Medical College in Mysore, India.
Additionally, Dr. Rao serves on the editorial boards of 25 journals and has received national and international recognition for his significant contributions to research in India.

AWARD

Dr. Rao’s achievements include receiving the Sir C.V. Raman Award from the Karnataka State Council of Science and Technology in 2003. He was also invited as a member of the task force on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in water and human health in Canada in 1998, and he was honored with the DBT Overseas Associate ship award in 1996.
Furthermore, Dr. Rao served as an Advisory Board Member of Jai Research and received the IBRO-France award. In 2019, he was designated as a scientific ambassador for cancer research in China.
